Joanna Bator’s novel “Gorzko, gorzko” well received in Germany

Joanna Bator's novel Gorzko, gorzko (“Bitter, Bitter”), translated by Lisa Palmes, was published in Germany. The book was very well received by critics, with positive reviews appearing in prestigious dailies and weeklies, including the 'Süddeutsche Zeitung', 'Neue Zürcher Zeitung', and 'Die Zeit'.

Bitter, Bitter is a story about the desire for love and freedom that matures in the lives and dreams of four generations of women. Why did Berta commit the crime? When did Barbara learn to throw a knife so well? Why did Violetta open Pandora's jar and what was in it? Will Kalina manage to find out the truth? The story of Berta, Barbara, and Violetta is told by Kalina, who finds the missing pieces of the family story in Walbrzych, Unislaw Śląski, and Sokolowsk and stitches them together. While painstakingly reconstructing the memory of her traumatised family, she simultaneously faces her own love loss.

Lisa Palmes introduced German readers to authors such as Wojciech Jagielski, Lidia Ostalowska, Filip Springer, and Justyna Bargielska, among others.
